Depositing Money in Interactive Brokers: the SEPA Transfer, Step by Step

There’s a very common mistake when depositing money in Interactive Brokers: believing that, once you fill in the deposit form, the broker is going to take the money from your bank. It doesn’t. What you do in the platform is notify that you’re going to send a transfer — the transfer itself you have to make yourself, from your bank.

Where it’s done

It all starts in the Client Portal (the client portal or account management interface). If you don’t know how to get there, we explain it in the article on how to log in to the Client Portal. Once inside, you have two paths to deposit: the quick links on the left, where “Deposit” and “Withdraw” appear directly, or the Transfer & Pay → Transfer Funds menu, where you choose your account and click Deposit.

Choosing the deposit method

If you’ve already made a first deposit, you’ll probably see your bank saved. If not, click create a new deposit method and say whether you want to do it in euros or in another currency. You’re offered several options:

  • SEPA bank transfer — the normal option for euros
  • Linking your bank account through open banking — an option that, for now, isn’t recommended in the video
  • A third route that isn’t used in Europe

For euros, the most common choice is the SEPA bank transfer.

Saving your bank

When you create the new method, you enter the bank’s name and the account number. The nickname fills itself in: if you move to the next field with the Tab key, it appears already filled. Then comes the deposit amount. The reference and recurring-notification fields aren’t mandatory — the recurring one is there, if you want, so that the notification is generated automatically every so often and you can make the transfer periodically from your bank. Click Next and the method is saved.

The most important part: the deposit notification

Interactive Brokers does NOT take the money from your bank

What you’ve just created is what Interactive Brokers calls a deposit notification: a notice that you’re going to send a given amount. In return, the platform shows you the account number you must send the funds to and the payment reference you have to use. Then you have to go to your bank and make the transfer yourself — the broker doesn’t pull money from your account.

The two details that can’t go wrong

The destination IBAN (account number) that Interactive Brokers shows you

The payment reference: your internal Interactive Brokers account number, a space or a slash, and your full name

The payment reference is almost as important as the account number, which is why the platform itself highlights it in red: it’s where most people go wrong.

The rest of the fields depend on your bank

Some banks only need the IBAN and the payment reference; others ask for more details, and may even throw an error because the bank listed as the beneficiary is German while Interactive Brokers is an Irish entity. The minimum you should always keep in mind is the IBAN and the payment reference.

How long it takes

Normally, between 24 and 48 hours from the moment you make the transfer at your bank — some banks are much faster and others take a little longer.

If you need help with a deposit

If a deposit doesn’t show up or you have doubts about the details, by linking your account to ProRealTime you get a personal account manager and support in Spanish for questions about deposits and withdrawals — we explain it in this article. And when you want to take money out, the reverse process is in how to withdraw money from Interactive Brokers.

Conclusion

Depositing in Interactive Brokers by SEPA comes down to three steps: create the deposit notification in the Client Portal, copy the exact IBAN and payment reference the platform gives you, and make the transfer yourself from your bank. The key isn’t the platform, but remembering that the broker doesn’t take the money on its own — and that the payment reference, with your account number and your full name, is as important as the IBAN.
