How to Download the Interactive Brokers Report for Your Spanish Tax Return

Learn how to download the Interactive Brokers report and prepare the correct data for your Spanish income tax return with the ECB exchange rates.

It’s time to file your Spanish income tax return and you need the Interactive Brokers report. Downloading it is simple, but the problem comes afterwards: the data the broker gives you doesn’t match what the tax authority (Hacienda) requires. Incorrect exchange rates, dividends, withholdings, the two-month repurchase rule — everything has to be recalculated. Let’s see how to download it step by step and how to simplify that process.

How to download the activity report

The first thing is to go into the Interactive Brokers account management interface. If you trade from ProRealTime, you can access it directly from the account management interface button within the platform. Once inside, with your username, password and the usual two-factor authentication, the steps are these:

Steps to download the report

Go to Performance & Reports (top right) and click on Statement

Select the account (or accounts if you have more than one)

Click on Activity Report (the blue arrow)

For the period select Annual — 2025, the full tax year, will appear by default

Click Download PDF for the visual report, or Download CSV if you’re going to use a calculation tool
PDF or CSV?The PDF is useful for an overview and to pass on to your accountant. The CSV is the format you need if you want to process the data automatically — it’s the file you’ll use to recalculate everything correctly.

The problem: the broker’s data doesn’t match Hacienda

Downloading the report is the easy part. The real problem is that the data Interactive Brokers gives you doesn’t correspond directly with what you have to declare. If you trade in the US market, the differences can be significant:

  • Exchange rates — Interactive Brokers uses its own exchange rates, but Hacienda requires the official European Central Bank rates from the day of each trade
  • Two-month repurchase rule — if you sell at a loss and buy back the same asset within less than two months, that loss isn’t deductible. The broker doesn’t apply this rule automatically
  • Dividends and withholdings — you have to correctly separate gross dividends, withholdings at source (W-8BEN) and the applicable double deduction
  • Derivatives — if you trade options or futures, all the currency conversion and the profit-and-loss calculation have to be redone with the correct rates
The difference mattersIf you simply declare the realized-return figure that appears in the Interactive Brokers summary, you’re going to declare an incorrect amount. The larger your trading and the more markets you trade, the greater the difference between what the broker says and what you actually have to file.

RentaXML: the tool to recalculate the data

To solve this problem I created RentaXML — a web app where you upload the Interactive Brokers CSV file and it gives you back all the data already recalculated the way Hacienda requires. In a few clicks you have everything ready:

Access RentaXMLYou can try the tool directly at rentaxml.com. Upload your Interactive Brokers CSV and check the difference between the broker’s data and what you actually have to declare.

  • Automatic conversion with official daily European Central Bank exchange rates
  • Application of the two-month repurchase rule
  • Breakdown of dividends, withholdings and W-8BEN
  • Correct calculation for options, futures and any derivative
  • Deductible leverage interest included
  • Indication of the corresponding boxes of Form 100
  • Form 720 included for the declaration of assets held abroad

Two ways to declare: aggregated or securities portfolio

Hacienda lets you enter the data in two different ways, and RentaXML gives you the information prepared for both:

Aggregated method

All losses and gains grouped into a single figure per asset type (stocks, derivatives, dividends). It’s the fastest method and the one many tax advisors prefer. RentaXML gives you a summary with the Form 100 boxes where you have to enter each figure, including the offsets if you have losses.

Securities portfolio method

Trade by trade, everything broken down in the securities portfolio section of the return. It’s more detailed and some accountants prefer it for transparency. RentaXML generates the complete list with each individual trade already recalculated, ready to enter.

PDF and guide includedIn addition to the data, RentaXML generates a PDF with everything broken down and a visual guide with screenshots on how to enter the data on the AEAT website, both for the aggregated method and the securities portfolio one.

How to use RentaXML step by step

The complete process

Download the Interactive Brokers activity report in CSV format (not PDF)

Go into RentaXML (link in the video description), create your account and select the tax year

Upload the CSV file — the app automatically downloads the ECB exchange rates and recalculates everything

Review the summary with the Form 100 boxes and the breakdown by asset type

Download the PDF, the securities portfolio output or the AEAT entry guide according to your preferred method
Important disclaimerRentaXML is a calculation aid tool, not a tax advisory service. It’s your responsibility to check that the data is correct before filing the return, and it’s always advisable to consult an experienced tax advisor if you have doubts.

Conclusion

Downloading the Interactive Brokers report is simple — the challenge is transforming that data into what Hacienda actually requires: official ECB exchange rates, the two-month rule, dividends and withholdings, derivatives… That’s exactly what RentaXML automates, so what used to take hours of spreadsheets and manual conversions comes down to a few clicks. Download your CSV, upload it to rentaxml.com and you’ll have everything ready to file correctly.
